August 2 First Friday: Art in the City Edition

Another month is here! Celebrate August and the kick-off to a celebration of the visual and performing arts in Downtown Dayton during First Friday from 5-10 p.m. on Friday, August 1! Favorite downtown businesses will be offering up specials, happy hours, live performances, and other special events with a special art-themed twist ahead of the Art in the City. Stop in to one of downtown’s signature galleries to enjoy the talents of local artists, shop with downtown’s unique retailers to find your new favorite statement piece, and enjoy a special happy hour performance on the patio of your favorite downtown eatery.

  • Bistecca, 137 N. Main St.: Enjoy an acoustic blues set with Chris Yakopcic

  • Blind Rage Records, 508 E. Fifth St.: First Friday Album Release Party 7-10 p.m.! Join us in celebrating the newest release from our vinyl imprint Blind Rage Records, ‘We Are’ the debut album from New Jersey melodic hardcore punks Not Gorgeous! We’;; play the album in its entirety on the top of the hour and have guest DJs the rest of the night! Free pizza and a test pressing raffle! There will be a Blind Rage exclusive variant on Neon Orange vinyl limited to 100 copies.
  • The Contemporary Dayton, 25 W. Fourth St.: The Co will be open till 8 pm for the public to view current exhibitions: “Laura Sanders: Force of Nature,” “Erin Holscher Almazan: What These Arms Hold,” and “Christine Gaffney: Well-Balanced.” Free and open to all.
  • Dayton Art Institute, 456 Belmonte Park North: Visit the latest exhibitions, “Captivating Clay: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from the Horvitz Collection,” “Themes in Yoshitoshi’s 100 Aspects of the Moon,” “Wonders in Color: Art by Alexander Calder & Others,” and “Cats in Art / Dogs in Art.” and “Curtis Barnes Sr., Dayton Icon.” Open until 5 p.m. on Friday.

  • Edward A. Dixon Gallery, 222 N. St. Clair St.: Opening Reception for the national, juried - We're Doing It ALL Wrong® - 5th Annual Art Exhibition.  The art exhibition features dozens of artworks from across the United States with several works from right here in Ohio.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.   • Front Street, 1001 E. Second St.: Front Street Artists invite you to explore all that our community has to offer during this month’s First Friday and Saturday Art Hop, when nearly one hundred artists and artisans open their art studios, galleries, & boutiques to the public. The RiverScape Café will be selling food & drinks along with alcoholic beverages for those 21+.
  • Speakeasy Yoga, 510 E. Third St.: Tamiko Stump, local artist and Speakeasy community member, will be showcasing several of her pieces during an open house from 6-8 p.m.
