Dayton Contra / Barn Dance
Picture long lines of smiling dancers, live fiddles and guitars, and simple steps anyone can learn — that’s a contra dance! Come join the fun, meet new people, or just relax and enjoy the music from great bands and callers. No experience needed, no partner required, and all ages are welcome! The lesson begins at 7, the dance starts at 7:30, at the Michael Solomon Pavilion. Admission is ten dollars for adults, seven for students, and children twelve and under get in free!
7:00 PM – Free lesson, all encouraged to come early
7:30 – 10:30 PM – Contra dancing

Contra dance differs from Square dance in that Contra dance is done in lines rather than in a 4-couple square. Many of the terms are the same in both Contra and Square dancing, so if you remember any of the terms from old school days or previous occasions you’re already halfway there. Now and then, a Contra dance caller may even call a Square dance or two during the evening’s dance.
Footwork in Contra dancing is very simple. Generally it’s just a walking step to the music.
