Theatre MADE Presents Toussaint Louverture

Born a Slave, with the Soul of a Free Man

How did enslaved people in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) rise up in 1791, challenge the European and American slaveocracy, defeat Spain, England, and France, and become the first Black Republic in the World? The story of the Haitian War for Independence, as depicted in Col. Charles Young's Shakespearean-level drama, is the greatest story in Black world history that you've never heard. Until now.

Join Theatre MADE on August 12 or 13, 3:00 PM, at the PNC Arts Annex for "Toussaint Louverture, a Negro History Drama." Directed by UD Professor Michelle Hayford, performed by American- and Haitian-born actors/readers, with dance, music, and featuring artist Benjamin Baugham--who will create an original work during the performance for auction afterwards--this is a staged reading like no other you've experienced before.

Who is Toussaint Louverture? Brilliant general, humanitarian, feared by slave owners across the Old and New World. The Black Spartacus. The Black George Washington. The Black Bonaparte. Toussaint Louverture, ex-slave and revolutionary leader, is beyond comparison. Col. Charles Young's 100+-year-old play presents the tragic and triumphant story of Louverture and the half a million ex-slaves whose victory over oppression continues to inspire the fight for liberty, equality, and fraternity today.

“Toussaint” will be a hot ticket this summer. Join us and be part of this history-making event. Tickets on sale at Dayton Live.
