Sam Kelly: Stripped Convention
This exhibition showcases Kelly’s response to important works created by prominent artists throughout history. Faced with the challenge of remaining faithful to the masters while also expressing his personal style, Kelly is “interested in stripping the original image bare, in order to reveal the essential character, framework, and energy of the piece.” Through this process, Kelly aims to emphasize the importance of form, shape, rhythm, and movement. Kelly does not classify himself as an abstract or figurative painter; he chooses to represent the raw power and structure within a piece rather than to depict a conventional narrative. Curated by the University of Dayton’s Curatorial Practice class, this exhibition runs from November 19th through December 8th. A reception will be held the evening of November 19th from 6 to 8 PM.
Sam Kelly received his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2014 and his Bachelor's of Fine Arts from Wright State in 2010, both with a concentration in painting. He was awarded the Danielle H. Friedman Gapka Paint grant to attend the Chautauqua Institution in New York and received the Yeck Fellowship for the Dayton Art Institute. Apart from his own studio practice, Kelly is an arts educator at several universities including the University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati, and Wright State Art Academy.
DIVISIBLE is a creative collaboration between Mike Elsass and Jeffrey Cortland Jones.
