On TLC's hit television series "Long Island Medium," Theresa Caputo communicates with the dead, and she's bringing her gift to the Nutter Center on October 8 for "Theresa Caputo Live! The Experience." Unlike most shows, Caputo's sole mission isn't just to entertain but to provide comfort by connecting the audience with the dearly departed.
"My goal is for that everyone who comes knows that the spirit of a loved one is with them and wants them to live a happy life," said Caputo. "The connection between souls is never broken when a loved one is lost, only the physical connection is lost."
Born and raised on Long Island in Hicksville, NY; Caputo has felt Spirits around her since the age of four, but it wasn't until her 20's that she learned to communicate with souls in heaven. After suffering from debilitating anxiety and trying to manage it on her own and with a therapist for years, Caputo's mother introduced her to a spiritual healer and teacher named Pat Longo. From just one session Caputo learned that the spirits energy was being suppressed, causing her anxiety. Caputo was taught how to channel spirit through her chakras and release is through words.
Caputo has been a practicing medium for over ten years now and is also a New York Times best-selling author, having written two books. "Considering I started this work with just a business card and word of mouth, I pinch myself when I think about what a crazy ride it's been for a typical Long Island mom," said Caputo.
A common question Caputo receives is how she receives the information from spirits, which is hard for her to describe because she sees, feels, and hears things differently than others in the physical world. She is spoken to by a spirit through a type of sixth sense. "When I get information, it feels like a very strong intuition, or recall. Spirit also uses a vocabulary of signs and symbols that they show me during a reading; over time, I assigned words, phrases and meanings to certain images I was shown, and then through trial and error, Spirit helped me add new ones until we created an entire vocabulary for us to work with. I translate my signs and what I feel the best I can, and then deliver the messages, but it's the client's job to interpret how the meaning is significant. It's like piecing together a puzzle, and can sometimes sound like guesswork, but Spirit speaks 'another language' at another speed, and in another dimension. My job's not easy!" said Caputo.
For Caputo it's never known what will be discovered by a reading as she goes in blindly. "It's not up to me, it all depends on the Spirit and the person it's connecting with," she said, "I can only guarantee that my hair and nails will be done and that the Spirits will be in contact."
At the Nutter Center, Caputo will not be up on a stage, but down on the floor with the audience, walking through the aisles. Those in attendance are always surprised by the intimacy of an arena show, due to the close connections Caputo forms.
The loss of a loved one is painful to all and Caputo feels very fortunate for the ability to bring comfort and joy to those who mourn. "I've helped many believe in the afterlife, led others to trust that their loved ones are safe and at peace, and shown them that those souls are guiding, encouraging and loving them from the Other Side. My wish for everyone I meet is that the Spirit gives them a message that brings them the most peace at the moment," she said.
There are still those who don't believe in mediums, but Caputo isn't bothered by them. "People are skeptical about everything anyone does. It's sad. People want to destroy things with negativity, not just what I do, but with everything. Why?" Caputo said. "Whether you believe or not, it will be a life changing experience."
