We’re celebrating all things guitar with a one-day festival of workshops, displays, food trucks, vendors and a community jam session (so bring your guitar if you have one)!

SCHEDULE:

12 – 12:30 p.m. Food trucks (Hunger Paynes, C’est Cheese, and Go Cupcake) available for lunch, visit vendor tables, hear So You Think You Can Play the Schuster winner David Baugham play on the DP&L Stage.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. WORKSHOP #1: “Rock ‘N’ Roll Night School” with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
In “Rock ‘N’ Roll Night School,” Drs. Jason Hanley and Kathryn Metz from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will examine selected recordings from the MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET session, including several Chuck Berry tunes, the New Orleans traditional “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” gospel classics such as Thomas Dorsey’s “Peace in the Valley,” and Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” plus many more. These recordings provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of rock and roll’s greatest performers and allow us to explore the legacy of this monumental event.

1:30-1:45 p.m. Break (food, conversation, vendor tables)

1:45-2:15 p.m. Community Jam Session
This event is a community jam session where participants will play their guitars together, culminating in several sing-a-longs.

C. F. Martin & Company is proud to present “The Evolution of the American Guitar,” featuring Martin’s Museum Director and Archivist Dick Boak. The workshop will showcase America’s oldest and most revered maker of acoustic guitars. The accompanying visual slideshow will focus on Martin’s colorful history, the development of the modern acoustic guitar, Martin’s historical contributions to the definitive acoustic guitar design, artist signature model collaborations, and on specific guitar shapes, sizes, and tonewoods that lend themselves to particular musical genres.

3:45-4 p.m. Break (food, conversation, vendor tables)

4-5 p.m. WORKSHOP # 3: “The Physics of the Guitar” with Jim McCutcheon
Physics-graduate-turned-career-musician Jim McCutcheon has always had a love of both science and music, and in this workshop, he will share some insights into the science and math that goes into guitar construction and sound production with demonstrations. Jim has produced a weekly classical guitar program called “The Intimate Guitar” on Dayton Public Radio for over 20 years.
