Giving Strings Benefit Concert
The nationally recognized Giving Strings Orchestra will perform its 17th annual free benefit concert at 7 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 13th on the 200 block of Ridgewood Avenue in Oakwood. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will be the alternate rain location. All are invited to attend the free concert. Audience members should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.
Dr. Patrick Reynolds, assistant conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic, will conduct. The concert, in a program of classics to pops will feature Dayton Philharmonic oboist Connie Ignatiou, in the Haydn Oboe Concerto. Connie Ignatiou is currently the 2nd oboist for the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and is also pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. A prize winner at the 2009 Barbirolli International Festival, Connie keeps an active playing career, performing with such groups throughout the Tri-state area.
Last year around 120 musicians from Oakwood and throughout the Miami Valley participated in this all-volunteer event. The annual concert raises funds and awareness for charitable organizations that impact the lives of children through free will donations made at the concert. To date, Giving Strings has raised over $51,000 for local children’s charities. All of the proceeds from this year’s concert will go to Helping Hands of Dayton, a charity that provides over 1,500 Care Kits per year of travel sized items to families with children in critical care at Dayton area hospitals. The Care Kits provide basic necessities that allow families to stay with their children and focus their energy and attention where it is needed most - on their child's recovery. String musicians of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to participate in this year’s concert. Music is available for pickup at 268 Ridgewood Ave. in Oakwood. Those who would like more information or those interested in donating items or services for the silent auction may call William, Gregory, Eric, or Regina Powers at (937)294-5605 or may email them at givingstrings@gmail.com.
