A clear sign that spring has arrived is the melodious songs of our returning migrant songbirds! Upon arrival home, these weary travelers are focused on finding two things: nutritious food and a mate. You can help these birds accomplish their mission by planting native plants! Native plants provide nourishing seed and nectar sources for birds, as well as, food for the insects that have co-evolved with these plants. Did you know that 96% of young North American land birds consume insects? Native plants support large numbers of beneficial insects that are crucial food sources for birds. Native plants also provide superior shelter for nesting, migrating and overwintering birds. With over half of our North American bird species threatened by climate change, native plants provide the perfect combination of superior food sources and shelter, increasing birds’ resilience. Conversely, non-native plants provide poor nutritional food, support very few species of native insects and offer inferior nesting and shelter sites for birds.

Unsure which plants will attract the greatest diversity of birds to your yard? Check out Audubon’s new Plants for Birds tool at www.audubon.org/plantsforbirds to determine which native plants will grow best in our region and what wildlife the plants support. You can also use the database to discover which plants will attract specific bird species. Aullwood’s Native Plant Sale Catalog also depicts which plants are good food sources for songbirds, hummingbirds, caterpillars and butterflies.

Now that you’ve selected your native plants and created a landscaping plan, what else can you do to create a bird-friendly yard? Reduce or eliminate toxic chemical use, keep cats inside, create or protect water sources, create shelters by making brush piles or letting dead trees stand, reduce light pollution by closing blinds or turning off excess lights and prevent window collisions. When you help birds, you are also providing healthy habitats for other pollinators and people too!
