ARTery Gallery May News

The ARTery  is a large Co-Op Gallery with 16 talented artists and artisans located in the Front Street Building in downtown Dayton. We welcome NEW Member Gae Helton, a very talented acrylic painter and mosaic creator with work on display for the first time this month as well as their Visiting Artist for May, Mr. Krab, who is a local painter.  Sarah Maxwell is the gallery’s Highlighted Member Artist of the Month for May, also a painter, and the Jaguar painting accompanying this article entitled “Dyslexia:Hearing”,  is one of her works.  The ARTery invites you to come meet these artists and see their colorful bodies of work at the Gallery this month which is open First Friday from 5-9pm and 3rd Sunday from 12-4pm each month.

Sarah Maxwell is a contemporary artist who draws her inspiration from social issues that affect the world, and her love of animals inspires her to use them as the subject of most of her paintings.  She hopes to convey her personal concern, as well as spreading awareness to the viewer and the world of many animals that are currently endangered and threatened by possible extinction.  The artist also uses her paintings of animals to help spread awareness and understanding of dyslexia, something the artist has struggled with herself over the years.

Sarah has been an award-winning artist since entering her first juried show in 2016 and in 2022 she won multiple awards as well as receiving an Artist’s Grant from the Montgomery County Arts and Culture District.  The artist used the grant to create a spectacular series of paintings where each animal becomes a physical representation of a variety of challenges those who have Dyslexia encounter every day.  The grant also allowed her to create and publish her first book, “Through the Eyes of Dyslexia” and her paintings are featured throughout it.

You can see this creative and intuitive series of paintings in person at the Woodburn Public Library May 9-31, and her encouraging Dyslexia book is currently available for sale at the ARTery Gallery at Front Street.  This very special book not only helps bring understanding of Dyslexia by sharing what Challenges people face who have it, but she also shares words of encouragement because they also share special strengths and abilities most people do not have.

Maxwell shared her favorite art-related experiences were with her favorite art instructor at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) where Maxwell earned her BFA in 2016.  The instructor’s name is Tina Tamarro who teaches Life Drawing and DAAP, and through this teacher, Sarah learned how to use encouragement and constructive criticism to progress her talents and grow her as an artist.  Maxwell is a member of the ARTery Gallery where she has a nice body of work on display, and she actively exhibits her work in a variety of outdoor Art Shows.

*The ARTery Gallery will also have a group of artists from the gallery exhibiting in the Centerville Police Station Gallery during the Month of May.
