Dayton Philharmonic: New World Symphony

New World Symphony

DPAA honors Black Music Month by celebrating African American musical traditions. Florence Price, the first Black woman to receive national attention as a symphonic composer, blends Joplin-esque ballroom and ragtime idioms into her Dances. Dvorák’s New World Symphony embraces Black folk music, fusing it with the composer’s Bohemian heritage. On the second half of the program, a community choir joins the orchestra to recognize and recount the African American experience in song.

Program:

  • Hale Smith “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”
  • Florence Price (orch. William Grant Still) Dances in the Canebrakes
  • Harry Thacker Burleigh “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”
  • Antonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 “From the New World”
  • Rosephanye Powell “Ascribe to the Lord”
