Dayton Philharmonic - Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem
The 2017–2018 season of The Great Ones opens with a thunderous roar when all the forces of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance combine for Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem! Verdi’s Messa da Requiem is the most theatrical requiem ever composed—a powerful musical setting of the Roman Catholic funeral mass for four soloists, double choir and orchestra.
In this innovative dramatic realization, you’ll see four soloists, double chorus, orchestra, and dancers heighten the meaning and emotional impact of Verdi’s compelling masterpiece. Lighting and graphic projections will convey and intensify the composer’s theatrical elements as well.
Few works offer such lavish riches as Verdi's Requiem: the drama of opera and the splendor of passionate symphonic writing and stellar, virtuosic solos. There are too many sublime moments to list them all, but no one will forget the hair-raising "Dies Irae," whose fearsome bass drum blows and full-throated choral singing vividly depict the sheer terror of what lies ahead on Judgment Day. There’s a "Lacrymosa" that seems to weep, an uplifting "Lux Aeterna," scored for three angelic flutes, and an agitated "Libera Me," whose text reads, "Save me, Lord, from eternal death." It brings the terrifying return of the "Dies Irae," which recurs throughout the work.
