The Pub's Recipe For Success

You wouldn't know it at first, but The Pub is actually a chain of restaurants and drinking houses, which recently announced its tenth location to open in Nashville. Here in Dayton, the spot at The Greene is one of the most popular places in town. Have you ever dropped by? If so, you know it's no ordinary dive bar.

I'll admit I've never been to the United Kingdom, and I'll admit I've heard many a stereotype about British cuisine, but to be sure, The Pub is quickly becoming my favorite bar at The Greene.

The Greene isn't the type of place I really picture a pub; such a place is supposed to feel a little dank and close-in, while the outdoor mall has a real spacious and wide-open feel.

But you can't deny the place has a following; it's always packed on the weekends and it's hard to find a seat. Between the extensive menu of layered beers, wines, bourbons, scotch and other classy drinks, there's always something new to sample.

From the Old Speckled Hen Ale onion gravy that tops its Bangers and Mash, to the beer cheese, and the Guinness onions and Young's Double Chocolate Stout BBQ sauce that top the BBQ burger, it's exciting to see so many unusual uses for the spirit, and I think it's that kind of menu that really attracts people.

Recently, they updated their menu to include some new offerings. Look out for their Sausage Flatbread, Fresh Fish soft tacos and Turkey Rachel (roasted turkey, coleslaw, 1000 Island, swiss cheese on toasted foccacia) amongst other items. Logan Hooper , General Manager of The Pub, told us he expects his favorite - the new Crispy Shrimp to become one of their signature menu items. I'd have to agree.

One of the casualties of the new menu is that baked beans have been dropped from their English-style breakfast, which used to be served on weekends. That was a slight disappointment to Dayton Local's British owner Chris James. "The Pub is the only place I've found locally that offers a truly authentic English breakfast", James told me. However, Hooper was keen to point out that they do listen carefully to their customers, and may well bring back the beans if they are missed.

Ultimately the atmosphere is really the masterpiece of the place. The interior is huge to be sure, with a large central bar and two wide dining areas, but the low-lit bar creates the perfect just-a-little-cramped feel that really makes English pubs charming. Add the kilted/skirted waitstaff and the everyday events like Monday's Trivia Night (with half-price Fish 'n' Chips - obviously their most popular dish!), and you've got a recipe for success.
