Luminary - Ragas interpreted through Kathak

Kathanauki School of Dance presents “Luminary – Ragas interpreted through Kathak” an elegant evening full of intricate dance movements and a rich cultural journey into the heart of India celebrating Indian music. Kathak is among the eight major classical dances of India and one of the most dynamic theater arts in the world. The word Kathak is derived from katha, meaning "the art of storytelling." Starting from the 16th century, it absorbed certain features of Persian dance and Central Asian dance which were imported by the royal courts of the Mughal era.

After the major success of “Legacy – in step with Kathak”, “SHE – A portrait through Kathak”, “Uferlos – Poetry of Sight”; this will be the 4th of such production to be held in the tri-state area.

The vibrant heritage of Indian classical music is spoken in the language of ragas. Each raga is dedicated to a specific time or season of the day or year. Each has its own set of emotions which our music brings to life. Dance has also been a mode of expression. Rossana Bandyopadhyay, an accomplished performer, choreographer and mentor in Kathak has taken on the challenge of combining these two forms of art in a completely unconventional way. In “Luminary- Ragas interpreted through Kathak”, the emotion of each raga is not just interpreted through music but also through dance. There will be about 90 dancers of various ages including Rossana Bandyopadhyay, who is also the founder and Artistic director of the school.

“Luminary – Ragas interpreted through Kathak” features choreography with complex spins and fast rhythmic footwork that will provide sheer visual delight. The mix of Indian classical and popular music will add to the character of the show. The varied pace of the dancers will take the audience through several moods reflecting the energy of the dance. Kathanauki School of Dance is based in Mason, OH and is the brainchild of Rossana Bandyopadhyay who started it in 2003. Her aim is to spread the knowledge and create awareness of this expressive and rich cultural heritage among the residents of the Tristate area of Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus.

Rossana, is a distinguished dancer who specialized in the Lucknow style of Kathak, graduating with top honors and distinction from the Nikhil Bharat Sangeet Parishad, a Kathak Academy in India. She also regularly teaches Master classes at College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati.

After continually presenting the last three shows to house-full audiences at Aronoff Center Cincinnati, the school felt the timing was apt to find the show a bigger platform – and what better venue than the Victoria theatre, which once was the home to nationally-acclaimed Dayton Ballet Company. As the school continues to see increasing representation of students from Dayton Area, performing in front of home audience, will go a long way in motivating and inspiring them.
