Taste and Savor During Summer Restaurant Week

Dayton Summer Restaurant Week is underway through July 31. Participating restaurants offer special menus and prices to encourage diners try something different. Fortunately, the Miami Valley Restaurant Association holds summer and winter restaurant weeks each year.

Many restaurants change their menus seasonally and it would be a shame to miss out on seasonal specialties. We've got a complete listing of participating restaurants and their menus.

The Sneak Peek to Restaurant Week; a preview event, offered the opportunity to taste and savor menu offerings from several participating restaurants. Normally held indoors, the event was held outdoors in the Park at Austin Landing. The new venue was a hit in spite of record heat and local entertainer Ashley Martin provided live music. Guests commented about the spacious venue and marveled at the value ($20.16 in advance).

The opportunity to receive tasting portions of several offerings takes the risk out of trying new foods. If you don’t like it, you get to find out without trying a full portion. When you love something, add that restaurant to your calendar during restaurant week.

I made the rounds, and here are my top 5 picks:

1. Salar

Northern Peruvian style braised lamb shank. Tender bone-in braised lamb shank simmered for hours in Andes mountains beer, cilantro, red onions and red bell peppers served over chilled lentil, bacon salad topped with fried leeks.

I would not have been brave enough to order this entrée without having had the opportunity to taste it first. Turns out, these were my favorite bites of the night!

2. Meadowlark

Shot of Chilled Beet Borscht

At first sight its pink color deceived me into thinking it was a dessert. Rich and refreshing, the shredded beets, cream, and dill took my taste buds by storm!

3. Chappy’s Tap Room

Chappy's Social House: Fresh Sweet Corn Chowder  (Taproom Menu & Social House Menu)

Local sweet corn is at its peak right now, so it makes complete sense to offer it in a soup. There is no shortage or bacon or corn in this rich broth based soup.

4. Lily’s

Grilled Pork Peach Caprese Pork Medallions with Pineapple and Watermelon Salsa AND Green Been Caprese

Making use of the bounty of fruits and veggies, prepared with fresh green beans, peach, mozzarella, melon, balsamic vinegar and topped with purple basil micro greens tastes like summer.

5. El Meson

Andalusian Gazpacho with Almonds and Sliced Beef Tenderloin over spring greens with a mango avocado salsa over garbanzo quinoa curry

This cold salad offered unique flavor combinations I wouldn’t expect to get anywhere else. The sliced beef tenderloin, served chilled was perfect for the cold salad.
