Curtis Barnes, Sr.: Love & Peace

April 30–July 17, 2021

The Dr. Robert L. Brandt  Jr., Family Gallery and the T. Chase Hale and Jon A. Hale Gallery

Consisting largely of portraits by the late, great educator, mentor, and Dayton legend, Curtis Barnes, Sr., an underappreciated and prolific artist who exemplified a generation of black painters who came of age in the 1960s through the 1990s, and whose contributions are still deeply felt today. The exhibition is curated by Michael Goodson and Zachary Armstrong who worked closely with Barnes’ family to restore and present this never-before-exhibited installation of the faces that moved and motivated this great artist: the Westwood Community portraits, portraits of his immediate family, and, importantly, stolid yet moving images of his own visage which collectively act as a portrait of time and a life dedicated to painting.
