Cauleen Smith: Remote Viewing

Cauleen Smith: Remote Viewing

April 30–July 17, 2021

The first presentation in our new Video Gallery will be the innovative work of globally recognized filmmaker, artist, and recent Studio Museum Wein Artist Prize winner for her work on Black Identity, feminism, and Afrofuturism, Cauleen Smith. Born from a StoryCorps podcast segment, Remote Viewing depicts a story in which a man related that, as a boy, he had watched the whites in his town attempt to obliterate every trace of the black community’s history by digging a deep hole in which to bury a historical schoolhouse built for the education of black students. Shocking and sublime, Remote Viewing is experienced at a distance through photo documentation and illustrates how this remove mirrors the detachment evident in our acceptance of systemic social violence, accessed via the blithe click of a PLAY button on an electronic screen. Courtesy of the artist and Corbett vs Dempsey, Chicago, IL.
