Fort Ancient Raises It's Hand for Teachers Appreciation Day

September 21, 2017 – Teachers, join the celebration at Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve as we salute you in October. On Saturday, October 21 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Preserve located in Oregonia, Ohio, presents Teachers Appreciation Day. The program is an informative orientation on the history, people, and science of Fort Ancient. Join us as we honor teachers and administrators. Bring your ID and admission is FREE!

The goal is to show you, the teacher, the opportunities that await you and your school children. Teachers will become the students, and Fort Ancient volunteers will be on hand to guide you through our wonderful educational program designed for grades 2 – 6. They will lead you through the facility on a grade-appropriate scavenger hunt.

There will be hands-on opportunities to play the ancient game of double ball, learn to throw a spear with an atlatl (spear thrower), and enjoy our educational interactive room with over 60 artifacts. Also explore a wigwam, the 18th-century dress up area, and interesting drums and rattles. Teachers will have an opportunity to tour the facility and come up with ideas to create personalized learning adventures for their students.

The Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve is the region’s leading resource for the history of the pre-contact culture of the people who once made the Ohio Valley their home.

The historic Preserve offers a wide variety of engaging exhibitions, programs, activities, and research to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the wonders of the massive earthworks. Created some 2,000 years ago, the Fort Ancient earthen embankments stretch for nearly 3 ½ miles, requiring 13 million cubic feet of dirt, and almost 400 years to complete.

As a teacher, you have an opportunity to impact the lives of many young people. You can help them to become stronger thinkers, creative dreamers, scientists, artists, or philosophers. Introducing them to the wonders of the historic Hopewell and Moundbuilder cultures will dramatically broaden their horizons. We hope to see you at this salute to teachers, our unsung heroes.
