Celebrating Aviation: Americans in the Battle of Britain
Join us on March 9 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force for a commemoration of the United States-United Kingdom partnership and the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain
Our mission is to honor the first ten Americans who fought for Britain in her darkest hour, sacrificing their U.S. citizenship to fly with the Royal Air Force against the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, July – October 1940. Included in the ten was P/O C.E. Davis from Ohio.
In honor of this event, the Museum’s Hawker Hurricane Mk IIa will be open for viewing. This is an extraordinary opportunity to get a close-up look at one of the types flown by Americans flying with the RAF, an aircraft rarely opened by the Museum for public viewing.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the ticketed public to view the Battle of Britain exhibit and see the Hurricane in the Early Years Gallery. Seating in the Museum Theatre will begin at 6:00, and the formal event will begin at 6:30 with presentations on the Battle of Britain, the all-American Eagle Squadrons formed beginning in 1941, and the continuing importance of the U.S./U.K. relationship. The U.K. Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Paul Lloyd, will dedicate a memorial plaque to the first 10 American RAF pilots in World War II, which will be displayed in the Battle of Britain exhibit at the Museum. The event will end at 8:35.
Join distinguished guests, military, and community members, as well as RAF personnel stationed at WPAFB, and representatives from other nations who flew in the Battle of Britain. Tickets for this event are $25
The Air Force Museum Foundation gratefully acknowledges Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP for their support of this event.
