From creepy crawly live animals to sweet treats, this family-friendly event is the perfect way to kick off the countdown to Halloween.

Four reasons not to miss MetroParks' family Halloween celebration

Join Five Rivers MetroParks from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark for its annual Fun Fall Spooky Evening in the Garden. Costumes are encouraged; parking and admission are free. Kid-friendly activities include:

1)  Crafty creatures and fall color: What would Halloween be without a few creepy creatures? Create bat, owl and spider crafts to take home. Learn about the important role these animals and insects play in the local ecosystem. Use fall leaves to create a masterpiece to share with your family.

2)  Storytime and tasty treats: Listen to tales of Halloween lore, and then meet the Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark wizard. Visit the bug man for some creepy crawly fun as he shares stories about the insects you can find in your backyard.

Craft your own magic potion created from herbal teas, then stop by the fire pits to roast a marshmallow. Refreshments are available throughout the evening.

3)  Live animals in action: Meet MetroParks’ animal ambassadors and learn about their habitats and behaviors. View a black rat snake, screech owl and box turtle up close, and then see if you can spot these amazing creatures in your favorite MetroPark.

4)  Creative costumes: Dress to the nightmarish nines with your family, or simply let your kiddos perfect their Halloween look before the big day. See what animals wear all winter during the Animal Fashion Show. Touch fur pelts and learn what keeps animals warm in cold temperatures, then hear stories about animal hibernation.
