Call for Entry: Design and Application Riverscape MetroPark Storm Sewer Riser

Description

This is a request for proposals for a painted (or other pre-approved media) design to cover a storm sewer riser located at RiverScape MetroPark. The riser is a concrete cylindrical form with a flat top, 55 inches in circumference and 55” high. The top of the form includes a large rusted steel manhole cover. The form sits on at the newly designed River Run Plaza, on a platform area of light tan concrete and with the “back” portion integrated into a series of 4 levels of stone benching, all designed to serve as a casual gathering space and viewing area for River Run. The selection committee is seeking a design that connects to the elements on and around the riser, including the water, waves, stonework, colors and patterns in the landscape and the large mural across the river.

Location & Background

RiverScape MetroPark, located at 111 E. Monument Ave., Dayton, OH, 45402, opened in 2001 and was the centerpiece of a highly collaborative effort to invigorate the redevelopment downtown Dayton. Serving the city and the region, RiverScape has become greater Dayton's metaphorical front porch, a gathering place for the community for multi-cultural festivals, concerts, and day-to-day enjoyment along Dayton's urban riverfront.

In 2018, the River Run was completed at RiverScape MetroPark. This in-river feature, aligned with the end of Jefferson Street, created a variety of paddling opportunities, most notably river surfing in kayaks or paddleboards. In 2020, onshore amenities were completed to compliment the River Run, including spaces for food trucks and kayak trailers as well as a mid-levee plaza that provides a hangout space for spectators of the River Run paddlers and those enjoying the river.
