Taco 'bout a good time! Another fabulous foodie event took place at Austin Landing last weekend.
Another fabulous foodie event took place at Austin Landing last Saturday, August 27th. Thousands of hungry and thirsty people were on hand when the inaugural Taco & Nacho Festival opened at 3p.
The mild temperatures, live music, tacos and nachos were irresistible. Some trucks even ran out of food and had to replenish as the crowd kept coming.
Fifteen vendors were on hand, 12 of them putting forth entries in the contests to be judged “Best” Taco, Nachos, Dessert, and/or Most Creative Dish, while also contending to be named People’s Choice Taco and Nachos.
Amy “Vanna” Zahora (MVRA Director) collected and presented taco, nacho, and dessert entries to the panel of judges. We were served smoked, pulled, stewed, and fried chicken, pork, beef, and fish topped with salsa, cheese, beans, jalapenos, slaw, and much more. Did you hear “gastrointestinal distress”?
Best Taco: Went to JA’s & Sweet-umms for their Basa Taco “The Catch”. Their seasoned cornmeal-coated catfish fried to perfection served on a soft tortilla topped with cabbage slaw earned unanimous thumbs up. I don’t even like fish, and I loved it!
Condado Taco submitted the only crispy taco shell paired with a soft taco. Their taco earned an honorable mention for best taco.
Best Nachos: The gang at Mr Boro’s Tavern also earned the People’s Choice for Nachos with Tortilla Chips, House Black Bean Corn Salsa, Lettuce, Smoked Chicken, Shredded Cheddar Cheese, Drizzled with Mr. Boro’s Tavern Home Made Ranch.
Most Creative: What The Taco’s Korean Beef Taco
Best Dessert: JA’s & Sweet-umms Best Damn Tres Leches cake was divine. Though they report that this was a new dish for Taco & Nacho Fest, I sure hope they keep Tre Leches on their menu.
Smokin’ Inferno BBQ & Catering earned Peoples Choice for Best Taco with their Hawaiian Street Tacos – smoked pork, homemade pineapple slaw topped with sweet habanero sauce.
