Battle of the Beavers: Community Rallies Behind Beaver's Mini Mart
Unless you've been living behind a dam, you can't have missed the news that Texas travel center giant Buc-ee’s recently filed a federal trademark infringement lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart, a neighborhood convenience store on Hanes Road in Beavercreek.
Buc-ee’s, which opened its first Ohio location in nearby Huber Heights this past April, claims that the mini mart’s logo featuring a smiling cartoon beaver is confusingly similar to its own famous mascot in a red baseball cap. The suit alleges that the store's sign could cause confusion amongst customers to wrongly assume an affiliation with the corporate travel center.
For many Beavercreek residents, however, the lawsuit misses the point. Beaver's Mini Mart has served the Beavercreek community for decades, long before Buc-ee's opened its first Ohio location, and much of the public reaction has centered on why a national chain is suing a longtime local mom and pop business.
In a statement to the community, the owners expressed deep gratitude for the neighborhood’s overwhelming backing:
"We want to take a moment to thank you—our amazing customers and the Beavercreek community—for your unwavering support over the years. You may have heard that we are currently facing a lawsuit filed by Buc-ee’s for simply using a beaver in our store name and branding. We created Beavers Mini Mart to represent our connection to this community and the city we proudly serve—Beavercreek. This lawsuit is unfair, and we believe small businesses should be able to operate without being bullied by large corporations. We are standing up for our rights and will fight this lawsuit all the way."
Two ways to support Beaver's Mini Mart this week
1. Beavercreek Buzz, a local community Facebook page, is organizing a Cash Mob Challenge at Beaver’s Mini Mart this Friday, encouraging residents to stop by Beaver's Mini Mart, pick up their favorite snacks, drinks, or craft beer, and spend at least $20. If you can't make it on Friday, they are open 6am-10pm every day.
2. A local GoFundMe page has been set up to help with legal costs.
