Did You Know There Is A Castle In Lebanon?

Vacations can easily be pictured as grand events with a lot of preplanning, saving pennies, and eager anticipation.  Becoming a seasoned world traveler sounds like a life many would like to live but typically that doesn’t sit well with most family budgets and schedules. For spring break this year I set out to satisfy my hunger for world travel with a wallet friendly, short stay close to home.

I was looking for something quaint that lends itself well to solidarity and relaxation. One of my favorite historical towns close to Dayton is the city of Lebanon. After clamoring around the Internet for a bit I stumbled upon the bed and breakfast of Brian Manor. The photos immediately took me aback.

Welcome to Brian Manor

Tucked to the side of a back road winding around Lebanon, Brian Manor is a phenomenal sight to see. The castle like home stands renovated from its original 1885 structure with all work, aside from the basic framing, completed by owner, Chris Brian. Inspired by a long-standing monastery in Rome, the self-taught mason has been laying bricks to complete his masterpiece for over 20 years. The artistry of the arches and turrets over looking the arboretum are an incredible sight to take in.

Chris spoke to me about a few last projects he is working on and his plans to soon lay aside the mortar and simply enjoy his creation. He and his partner Jan run the bed and breakfast together and do a great job of creating a tranquil setting for guests.

Enjoying Breakfast at Brian ManorWhen I first stepped out into the courtyard from my cozy suite, I was immediately transported from mundane modern life and felt as if I were in a whole other country. The courtyard leads back to a beautiful wood burning fireplace—a perfect spot for summer nights and sipping wine with friends. In another direction you can walk out to the arboretum, which features an impressive amount of trees and other plants. I can’t wait to go back and visit, as it was too early in the season for anything to be in full bloom. It was still nice to roam free and enjoy the grounds.

My stay in was just as rewarding as it was to see the architecture on the outside. After arriving in for the evening Jan brought me a tray of cheese and a glass of wine. I also got to sample a brownie dessert, drizzled in an unbelievable raspberry sauce, made with raspberries grown right on the grounds. Though part of their home, my private suite was away from the main house and I did not feel intrusive nor did it interrupt my relaxation.

As if the beauty of the place and the restful nights’ sleep weren’t enough, the morning after I was treated to the most decadent French toast most fittingly named, Naughty French Toast. Jan also whipped up some bacon, cinnamon apples, and pear bread baked with more fresh fruit from the grounds. It was an incredible meal that I would go back for in a heartbeat—I love my breakfast foods!

Brian Manor is the perfect place for some uninterrupted rest and relaxation, a romantic getaway with a loved one, or even a ceremony or celebration with friends. Chris and Jan are very gracious hosts and I enjoyed getting to know them.

If you’re looking to add even more fun to your stay sign up for a painting lesson with Jan and Chris or check out the local hotspots in historic downtown Lebanon like the Golden Lamb. Give yourself that hassle free vacation you’ve been dreaming of and take yourself away to Brian Manor for the weekend. Do me a favor though and save me a plate of Jan’s homemade breakfast, will ya?
