What to Taste: Daytons Summer Restaurant Week

After sampling food from Dayton's top restaurants ahead of Summer Restaurant Week, here are my favorites.

What to Taste: Daytons Summer Restaurant Week

The Miami Valley Restaurant Association has pulled off another successful Sneak Peek to Summer Restaurant Week. Hundreds of foodies gathered at the White Allen European Auto dealership to preview items from 14 restaurants Wednesday. Participating restaurants offer one, or sometimes 2 “tastes” of menu items that will be included in their Restaurant Week menus. It’s not often that you get the chance to sample items from so many of Dayton’s top restaurants in one place at one time. Sneak Peek events are among my favorites.

My 3 favorite items were:

Jay’s  Seafood ~ Smoked Red Trout (photo top left) with pearl pasta and mushroom sauce. My friends and family won’t believe it ~ I keep telling them I don’t like fish. True, I don’t just like this dish, I love it!

Figlio ~ Crab Chowder. Featuring local sweet corn while it’s in season, this chowder has a little spice that makes it just right. I can’t wait to get back for more!

El Meson ~ Peruvian Peanut Chicken (photo top center) ~ stir fried chicken with peanuts, soy sauce, and ginger served over Jasmine Rice. It could also be called Peruvian “comfort food”!

Most creative new tastes:

Wheat Penny ~ Cantaloupe (photo top right) topped with minced beef spring roll meat, cucumbers and toasted peanuts. Those who dared could get a few drops of habanero oil on top. I dared, magnificent.

Salar ~ Parmesan Saffron Risotto with smoked cauliflower garnished with arugula walnut pesto. Smoked cauliflower filled in superbly for meat or fish in this dish. Vegetarians rejoice!

Worth Repeating:

The Dock ~ Lobster Bisque frequently appears at Sneak Peek events for good reason. It’s consistently rich and creamy.

Summer Restaurant Week starts Sunday July 26th and runs through Sunday August 2nd. Check in with us frequently for updates and menus from participating restaurants.  Scroll down for photos!
