As Dayton prepares for Labor Day weekend celebrations, it is bidding goodbye to one of the hottest summers on record.

But, says Dorothy Lane Market corporate chef Carrie Walters, the heat hasn’t affected the options for delicious grilling over the weekend.

"A lot of crops are still gorgeous regardless of the weather,” Walters said.

She added some of the simpler vegetables to grill – like squash and corn – are looking good this year, and are relatively simple to grill.

An interesting trend of late is grilling fruit, when done lightly, it can enhance the flavor.

"Take nectarines – they’re a little bit past the stage – but they make a great desert.” She said, suggesting some nectarines and chopped fruit topped with goat cheese and a little olive oil.

Another option, she said, would be to lightly grill some peaches or nectarines for desert – or add a splash of amaretto and top with almond for a fresh summer cocktail.

Dorothy Lane will have a Wild Coho Salmon Sidewalk Sale at all three stores from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. August 31 through September 2.

The National Weather Service predicts highs will stay around the lower 80s for the holiday weekend. There will be a 50 percent chance of rain Sunday and a 30 percent chance Monday.

Grilled DLM Strip Steaks

Serves 4

4 DLM Prime strip steaks
DLM Grilling and Seasoning Rub
DLM extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Preheat the grill to high. Remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let them come to room temperature.
Season the steaks liberally with the Rub and let sit for at least 15 minutes. Arrange the steaks on the hottest part of the grill and cook until grill marks form (about 2 minutes), then rotate the steaks 90 degrees to create the crosshatch marks. Turn the steaks over and let cook to the desired doneness. Cook about 5 to 6 minutes on each side for medium-rare.
