Cool down at JD's Old Fashioned Frozen Custard

As we approach some of the hottest days of summer, you might be in need of new fun to help you beat the heat. In my opinion there isn't a heat wave out there that can't be defeated with a little ice cream.

As we approach some of the hottest days of summer, you might be in need of new fun to help you beat the heat. In my opinion there isn't a heat wave out there that can't be defeated with a little ice cream. My favorite place to cool down, JD's Old Fashioned Frozen Custard, has a retro flair and is serving up cold treats reminiscent of the good old-fashioned ice cream your grandparents used to enjoy back in the day.

Ice Cream!Unlike modern day ice cream, JD's uses a fresh egg based butterfat cream that creates a hand-churned like, smooth and creamy consistency. Made fresh daily, JD's carries their main flavors vanilla, chocolate, and lemon along with their "flavor of the day".

It is the perfect place to take the family where you can choose from treats such as sundaes with homemade toppings, concretes, floats, smoothies, milkshakes, sno-cones—you name it! There are lots of other homemade treats such as buckeyes and chocolate covered strawberries, marshmallows, and bananas. Even the family pooch will be begging for a trip once he knows there is a menu item just for him. Order Fido up a "dogwich" (vanilla custard smooshed between two milkbones). My favorite treat is the Red Raspberry Sundae (photo top right) - lemon custard covered with a raspberry topping or the Blue Raspberry "flavor of the day". But if peanut butter and chocolate are your kind of thing, I hear the treats with that combination are their best sellers! For the kids or kids at heart, trust me. You can't go wrong with a Trash Can Sundae.

JD Custard, EnglewoodThough the cold treats are incredible, what makes this place unique to me is the friendly diner environment. It is a lot of fun to eat in style of the good old days and spend time with friends and family in that small, hometown atmosphere. I have been coming to JD's with my family ever since they opened up in 1998. The family owned and operated business has that personal touch, connecting with the local community and holds many events to bring people out all summer long. Some of their upcoming events include:

  • Christmas in July—July 22-25—bring in a new toy for Children's Hospital and receive a free scoop. (They'll even have special holiday flavors available such as peppermint, eggnog, pumpkin pie, and cinnamon spice!)
  • Back to School Special—August 17 & 18—all school-aged children receive a single cake cone for only $1.50 and a free cow pencil!
  • Grandparents Day—September 8—all grandparents receive a free single cake cone.

JD's is located in Englewood directly across from Centennial Park. For added fun, have the kids bring their bathing suits and walk over to the parks' sprinkler water feature. Your family is sure to have fun creating summertime memories with a scoop of JD's Old Fashioned Frozen Custard in hand.
