TEENS DISCUSS & LEARN AT THE LIBRARY: Dating Violence and Prescription Drug Misuse

Two programs coming up at several branches of the Dayton Metro Library tackle tough topics many teens face: dating violence and prescription drug misuse.

IN THEIR SHOES: TEENS AND DATING VIOLENCE is a scenario-based training that generates thoughtful discussion among teens. Karen McQueary from Artemis Center, Dayton’s Domestic Violence Resource Agency, invites participants to take on the perspective of different characters, based on the experiences of real teens; scenarios include sexting, pregnancy, homophobia and stalking. They make choices and move through the scenario by reading about interactions with their dating partner, family, friends, counselors, police, and others.

“This program is being used to educate teens about healthy relationships in over 400 communities across the country,” said Julie Buchanan, Programming Manager for the Library. “It’s a comfortable way for young people to talk about dating violence and healthy relationships.”

In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence takes place at these Library locations:
