Free family fun at one of Dayton’s prettiest MetroParks allows children to play, learn, and interact with nature.
While there are many things to love about the Dayton area, one of the best things is the abundance of family-friendly parks, businesses, and experiences our home offers. Located just a short drive from downtown, The Children’s Discovery Garden at Wegerzyn Garden MetroPark is a fun and free outing that deserves to be added to every family’s summer bucket list.
The beautiful blooms and abundance of plants are definitely a highlight, but even if your kids don’t demonstrate a green thumb The Children’s Discovery Garden offers an experience all will enjoy. Garden Greeters can suggest a variety of games or scavenger hunts your family can complete around the gardens, but even without a specific activity, the Gardens offer something for everyone to explore.
A Musical Maze offers kids the chance to play hide and seek among plants while playing songs on instruments hidden throughout the garden, while other areas allow your young scientists to discover fossils along with leaf and animal prints throughout the park. In the Sensory Garden, children can go beyond just smelling flowers by tasting mint or feeling furry plants that engage all the senses. Just around the corner they can use their imagination while playing in the sand tables and sandbox.
Crawl-through caves and garden tunnels, a dragonfly pond, wetland observation decks, activity tables, and an old fashioned pump/watering cans that kids can use to water the plants are just a few of the other opportunities throughout the Garden, making it a great summer spot for kids of all ages. Restrooms, drinking fountains, picnic tables, and plenty of shade are also available, perfect for spending a day at the park.
After working up a sweat while exploring the gardens, kids and adults alike will enjoy cooling off in the water-play areas which feature a wading stream and waterfall features, perfect for fun on a hot summer day.
Located at 1031 E. Sibenthaler Avenue, the Gardens are open from April through October from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The water feature is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10 AM – 8 PM. Perfect for play dates, picnics, or simply a free family outing, you won’t regret adding a visit to the Children’s Discovery Garden to your list of summer adventures!
