If you have your sights set on tackling that bucket list or setting a personal goal to try new things this year, Dayton is home to the perfect place to get your adventure on.

Urban Krag is a climbing center set right in the heart of Dayton near the Oregon District. Transformed from an old abandoned church while maintaining its classic architecture, Urban Krag is 8,000 square feet of vertical rock wall climbing terrain that varies in height. The space also includes inclined bouldering walls with routes mapped for advanced and beginner climbers.

I have to thank my friend Kara for this relatively hidden Dayton gem. (Pun not intended but totally played out well, don’t ya think?) Prior to a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of Urban Krag. Come to find out, they’ve been offering climbing fun to the Dayton area for 17 years! Falling right into place with my New Year’s goal to learn a new skill, I jumped at the chance to give proper rock wall climbing a try.

The Krag’s laid-back atmosphere is the perfect place to come in as a newbie who may be intimidated by the sport or the already advanced climber looking to improve his or her own skills. The staff is helpful and readily available to offer any advice that you need. The couple of times I’ve been, other climbers have also been very friendly and willing to help you out.

Your first visit includes a day pass, belay certification, harness, and shoes for under $40. With that you also receive a free week of climbing which is a generous deal and great way to give the place a trial run before committing to a full membership. The belay certification is only about 30 minutes depending on how fast you learn to tie knots, but belaying is quite simple after learning the correct procedure. If you’re an experienced climber you can bring your own gear, skip certification, and take a quick test demonstrating your knowledge of belaying safely which will save you a few dollars.

Utilizing my free week of climbing I visited the Krag with some friends and we had an absolute blast testing our physical strengths and limits. I love being active but the same old gym routine can quickly begin to feel like a chore. Climbing was such a thrilling change and offered a great workout. Using my body and mind to reach the top is such a relaxing feeling and a great stress reliever - not to mention, FUN!

Take this opportunity to try something new in 2014 and visit Urban Krag! The atmosphere is adventurous and inviting. They have a variety of membership packages to meet your needs and offer much more such as advanced training classes, group outings, and special events. Make it a family event and bring the kids or grab a few friends and take the climb.
