Mum Festival

Every year for 54 years, Tipp City hosts a festival honoring the beautiful chrysanthemum (commonly known as "mum" for short). As much as I love Tipp City, I'm surprised I haven't been to the Mum Festival and after a short discussion with Tipp City Board of Trustees President Mary Thomas about all of the great activities, new vendors, and rich history of the festival, I feel crazy for never getting my Mum on sooner!

The Mum Festival originated in the late 1950s when members of the Chamber of Commerce decided on the chrysanthemum as the symbol of Tipp City, being as it was a major seller for Spring Hill Nurseries. This year, Tipp City is honoring the festival's mid-century roots with the theme "Vintage Mums…Long Live the 50s."

This year, attendees will still get to experience their favorite activities like the 21st annual Cruise-In on Friday, September 28, and the Parade at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 29. For the athletic attendees, there is a race on Saturday, September 29 called the Run for the Mums 5K Run, which begins at 8:00 am with all proceeds going to the Needy Basket, a local charity for needy families. Returning this year is the 2012 Mum Festival Bike Tour on Sunday, September 30 at 7:30 am.

In case you are not yet convinced, I asked what two aspects of the festival people should make sure to try. First, Mum's Kids Land is a great way for parents to enjoy the festival - while Mom and Dad get to walk around the various booths and concessions, Junior can have a great time playing with other children in a safe, secure play area. Second, you simply have to try the highly recommended waffles made by the Tipp City Fire Department.

The Tipp City Mum Festival - Sept 28-30 - is a must-see! I'm definitely adding it to my festival list this fall.

UPDATE: Rumor has it that Eddie Munster is taking part in the Tipp City Mum Festival Parade! Be There - 10 AM - Saturday 29 at Main Street, Downtown Tipp City.
