Introducing...Teresa Olavarria and Iroshizuku Ink

Virtually join the DSA for an iroshizuku ink workshop over Zoom! Meet instructor, Teresa Olavarria, and learn about her artistic practice. Follow along and using suggested materials listed below, to discover the unique properties of Tsuyu-kusa Iroshizuku ink when applied to rice paper with a sumi brush. Learn how to control and enhance the ink with water and pearlescent gold and white inks through a series of experiments. The workshop will conclude with the creation of a mandala.

Materials Needed

  • Size 6 Sumi Brush
  • 10ml Blue Iroshizuku Ink
  • 10ml Mazuma Gold Ink
  • 10ml Pearl White Ink
  • 3 square porcelain bowls
  • 3- sheets Rice Paper 9"x 12"
  • 1- Bristol Sheet of paper 9" x 12"
  • 8x10 plexiglass
  • Painters Tape
  • Bond (Printer) Paper
  • Mandala templates
  • Large Clear Jar for Water
  • 2 smaller containers for water (to keep inks pure)
  • Paper Towels for Blotting
  • Optional: Raised Edge Cookie Sheet
  • Optional: Apron to Protect Clothing
  • Optional: Yes Paste to mount final rice paper creation

Teresa Olavarria
Teresa Olavarria has taught art at Rosewood Art Centre, the Dayton Art Institute and the Carpenter Art Enamel Foundation. She has a BFA from The University of Dayton and attended University of Louisville for Art Therapy. Her non traditional approach to sumi style ink painting embraces the fluidity and meditative qualities of the medium with playful control.

Introducing...
The purpose of the workshop series, Introducing..., is to acquaint DSA members and the community to different mediums and methods in the visual arts. In conjunction, the attendees will get to know the instructing artist, their background, and tips and tricks of their trade.
