The Oregon District Business Association (ODBA) has announced a new initiative called 'Out On Fifth' to expand outdoor seating within the district.

Starting Labor Day weekend, Fifth Street in the Oregon District will close to vehicular traffic on the weekends.

The pedestrian-only space will stretch between Patterson Boulevard and Wayne Avenue from 5 p.m. on Fridays evenings until 10 p.m. on Sundays through the end of October.

Many businesses and restaurants have faced a devastating decline in customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The pilot program is intended to provide more room for social distancing and increase business with extra outdoor seating for restaurants and more space for retailers to expand onto the sidewalk.

Weekends will feature live entertainment and special sales events, starting with the Downtown Dayton Sidewalk Sale on Sept 4 & 5. Hand sanitizer stations will be positioned throughout the district, and visitors are reminded to use masks while indoors and outside when social distancing cannot be maintained.

Also starting Sept 4, the Oregon District will become a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), which allows patrons to buy and consume alcoholic beverages bought at participating businesses 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily while in the area.
