Lie and Smile

The University of Dayton Radial Gallery is excited to present Lie and Smile works by Rana Young opening September 30th and running through October 26th, 2021! Lie and Smile reveals the tension of uncertainty as the artist interrogates the estranged relationship she had with her mother. The artist, Rana Young, produces diaristic constellations employing visual tension, and unstable transition, as projections on the past and future. Through responding to her mother's archive and absence, the artist constructs prosthetic memories to reinterpret her life and embalm her death. UD’s Department of Art and Design also invites you to a public reception September 30th from 5-7pm at Radial Gallery located in Fitz Hall on the second floor.

Regular gallery hours are 9-4pm M-Th and 9-2 Friday.

About the artist:

Rana Young is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Art at the University of Arkansas. As an Othmer Fellow, she earned an MFA in Studio Art, Photography from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2017.

Young has exhibited solo exhibitions at Filter Space (Chicago, IL), Perspectives Gallery (MIAD, Milwaukee, WI), and the University Galleries of Illinois State University (Normal, IL), and in group exhibitions at SF Camerawork (San Fransico, CA); Klompching Gallery (New York, NY); House of Lucie (Los Angeles, CA); and The Galleries at Herron (Indiana University). Her work has appeared in The Photographer’s Green Book, Harper’s Magazine, Travel + Leisure, The New York Times, and featured online by Firecracker, VICE, L'Oeil de la Photographie, and W Magazine. Young's clients include the ACLU, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, the Sheldon Museum of Art (Lincoln, NE), and The Momentary (Bentonville, AR), among others. Kris Graves Projects (Queens, NY) published her first monograph, The Rug's Topography, in 2019. In recent years, Young was named as one of thirty “new and emerging photographers to watch” (The 30, formerly PDN’s 30), and honored as a Critical Mass Finalist (Photolucida), Emerging Talent (LensCulture), and a Flash Forward Winner (The Magenta Foundation).
