World House Summit celebrates civil rights achievements
UPDATE: The MLK World House youth event scheduled for Saturday Jan. 19 is canceled. Watch for a reschedule date in February.
Commemorating the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dayton Human Relations Council will host the annual Youth World House Summit, an event designed to increase understanding and appreciation for the civil and human rights movement.
The event will take place at Grace United Methodist Church
at 1001 Harvard Blvd. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year's theme: "Understanding Social Equality." Admission is free.
The celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King and to inspire youth to take action and create positive change in their communities. In addition to the historical relevance of the civil rights movement, presenters will explore contemporary issues regarding race, social justice, and diversity.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "World House," the Dayton event will also celebrate the cultural diversity of the community with world music, dance, spoken word, and food. Youth will have the opportunity to help create banners to be used during Dayton's MLK March & Rally

“We have inherited a big house, a great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together – black and white, Easterners and Westerners, Gentiles and Jews, Catholics and Protestants, Muslim and Hindu, a family unduly separated in ideas, culture, and interests who, because we can never again live without each other, must learn, somehow, in this one big world, to live with each other.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
