May Speaker Series
Centerville-Washington History presents: “Lincoln’s Northern Nemesis: Clement Vallandigham," by Martin Gottlieb on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm at the RecPlex West auditorium, 965 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd in Centerville.
Clement Vallandigham was an Ohio lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician. When the Civil War broke out, he quickly emerged as Lincoln’s leading antagonist in the North. In 1863, Vallandigham was court-martialed for “declaring sympathies with the enemy” and was exiled. The result of his arrest was a campaign (from exile) utterly unique in American history.
Martin Gottlieb is a retired journalist, columnist, and editorial writer who worked for the Dayton Daily News for 27 years. Gottlieb wrote about local, statewide, national, and international events. He was perhaps best known for his columns about predicting the outcomes of elections. He eventually wrote a book, on that subject, called ‘Campaigns Don’t Count: How the Media Get American Politics All Wrong’. His column made appearances in at least 100 Newspapers. Martin retired in 2011.
