Fun Summer Activities at Fort Ancient
Fort Ancient Earthworks and Nature Preserve has lots going on during the month of July. Activity highlights include a get-close-to-nature theme with interesting nature hikes, archaeology day, and a closer look at fossils. Here are a few weekend programs that take full advantage of the summer season.
July 14, 2018 - Prairie in Bloom Nature Hike with Dave Woehr - 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm During the middle of summer, there are many things that can catch your attention if you know what to look for. Join Fort Ancient volunteer, and Certified Ohio Volunteer Naturalist Dave Woehr, as he walks you through the prairie and woods to learn about the plants, bugs, and wildlife around Fort Ancient.

July 21, 2018 – Archaeology Day – Artifact and Fossil Identification -12:00 pm – 4:00 pm Learn about the history of Fort Ancient through 30-minute tours and then have your fossils and artifacts identified by a professional archaeologist and geologist (from 12:30 - 3:30 pm). Guests will also have the opportunity to throw a spear with an atlatl (spear thrower), learn a game called double-ball, play in the interactive classroom and dress in 18th-century clothing, then stroll through the museum and hike a trail. Bring a picnic lunch for the picnic area.

July 28, 2018 - Rocks Talk at Fort Ancient - Presented by Todd Stephenson - 10:30 am – Noon
Discover the rocks and fossils of the Fort Ancient area and their influence on the Native American Indians who lived there in this introductory class that includes hands-on evaluation of samples using geologist tools to see and hear what the rocks tell us. This class will also include a section on the importance of flint at Fort Ancient for making tools and spear/arrowhead construction, and will highlight geologic examples of rocks and minerals from various locations in North America as a result of trade activity.
