Fort Ancient Presents - The Original Trail Mix: Fruits, Nuts, and Grai
Join us for the 2019 Fort Ancient Lecture Series featuring an all-female line-up of experts in their field. On Saturday, February 23 at 10:30 a.m. we welcome Dr. Karla Hansen-Speer of Indiana State University for an interesting talk entitled The Original Trail Mix: Fruits, Nuts, and Grains in the Middle Woodland.
Dr. Hansen-Speer will share her expertise on The Middle Woodland Period (200 BCE – 600 CE) in the Midwestern United States, which is best known for the Hopewell. However, west-central Indiana does not fit that definition well. Surrounded by Hopewell culture, yet perhaps not fully of it, the Northwood site of west-central Indiana was the focus of Indiana State University’s archaeological field school.
Survey and excavation have revealed a village surrounding a plaza. The plant remains from the site give clues to the lifeways of this little-understood area. Visit Fort Ancient as we discover more about the environment and culture of the area and how it impacted the lives of inhabitants of the Northwoods site.
Admission to the Lecture Series is free and open to the public.
Fort Ancient is located at 6123 St. Rt. 350, Oregonia, Ohio 45054 - 513–932–4421/1–800–283–8904 Fax 513-932-4843. Fort Ancient winter hours are observed from December 1 to April 1: Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday: noon–5:00 p.m. *Closed Monday–Friday, except by appointment.
