Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Masterworks Series 2019-2020 - Stravinsky and Strauss at The Schuster Performing Arts Center in Dayton, OH.

Dayton Philharmonic: Alpine Symphony - canceled

The program opens with Stravinsky’s beautiful chorale work, Symphony of Psalms. Stravinksy has said of his own work, “This is not a symphony in which I have included Psalms to be sung. On the contrary, it is the singing of the Psalms that I am symphonizing.” (Vera Stravinsky and Robert Craft, Stravinsky in Pictures and Documents) Then, a splendid musical travelogue through the mountains, Strauss’s gigantic An Alpine Symphony explores the full scope of orchestral grandeur, charted through the exciting ascent and descent of an Alpine peak. The composer’s sprawling musical adventure is a thrilling, full-throttle experience.
