Dayton Philharmonic: Hello, Louis! A Tribute to Louis Armstrong
The final Vista to be viewed in the 2018–2019 SuperPops series is that of the work of the endearing Satchmo. Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra welcome guest artist Byron Stripling for a concert featuring the works of Louis Armstrong.
The trumpet man with the smile to end all smiles, Louis Armstrong was one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world. He popularized scat, and his music defined swing.
Armstrong is widely considered the “founding father of jazz,” with his hit music spanning five decades; he wrote dozens of songs that are now jazz standards. Although Armstrong was born in New Orleans, his music is representative of all America with songs such as “Blueberry Hill,” “Mack the Knife,” and “Hello, Dolly” (which was the Grammy-winning song of the year in 1965). He went on to win 11 Grammys as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award. Guest trumpeter Byron Stripling is well known for his electrifying and heartfelt tribute to Louis Armstrong. Both his voice and his trumpet have been dazzling audiences around the country. And his rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In” will make it difficult to sit still and not dance in the aisles!
