Brad Williams at Dayton Funny Bone
There’s many things that his diminutive size prevents Brad Willams from doing, such as adjust the showerhead in a hotel shower, but he’s still been able to reach his dream of being a stand-up comedian. (Yes, he is standing up) Born a dwarf, Williams measures small in stature, but large in laughs. At the Funny Bone, May 12 – 15, Williams plans to leave his mark as a giant of comedy.
Even if some of his jokes fall a little…short, Williams guarantees that everyone in attendance will enjoy themselves. “Little people are awesome. You can’t be upset when looking at one, it’s impossible,” he said.
Williams has fully embraced his life as a little person, by using it as a stepping stone for opportunity rather than a handicap. He has never allowed himself to think of what might have been if he was normal sized like the rest of his family. “I didn’t plan to be a dwarf, it the hand that I was dealt and I’m forced to live with it in both my personal and professional life. I don’t have any other way of living to compare it with, it’s all that I know,” said Williams. “I’ll never get to be a professional football player, but neither will a lot of people.”
Among his many television appearances, which includes ‘Pitboss,’ ‘Little Women: LA,’ and ‘The Tonight Show,’ Williams is perhaps best known for his role on ‘Mind of Mencia.’ Carlos Mencia is credited with directing Williams towards a career in comedy. During one of his acts. Mencia picked Williams out of the crowd to join him on stage and saw lots of potential. Mencia served as a mentor, and Williams is most grateful for all he’s been given.
An aspect of being a comedian that Williams finds pleasure in is his ability to control how he is perceived. When seen out in the public, others may view him as a freak, but on stage he’s able to reveal his true identity. “I like that all the attention is on me and I have the power to do with it what I want. I have control over how people view me and how the interaction proceeds,” he said. “The groupies are cool too.”
Williams has now been doing stand-up for 12 years and his act has grown through the years (his height hasn’t). In the beginning his entire act would be about being a dwarf and now it’s slightly less than half of his material. “You have to mention it, otherwise everyone would stare, like, does he know?” said Williams.
