A Vicarious Spring

A Vicarious Spring

A Vicarious Spring

The longevity of this exhausting weather has really put a damper on enjoying what Spring has to offer. I don't think there is anything more relaxing than sitting out on the patio with a great glass of wine and a plate of cheese on a beautiful spring evening. With the craziness of the holidays behind us and the ever so vivid warm days ahead of us, it's about time we treat ourselves to some excellent juice!

In Ohio, let's be honest, 80 degree weather with sun can easily switch to an ugly blizzard, torrential rain, or high humidity in just one day! For those of us living the reality of Ohio weather, let us drink a glass of a great French white wine and live vicariously through the acidity and liveliness of some these obscure yet simple wines.

For the past few years, Mas de Daumas Gassac has been producing a wine that I've fallen in love with, called Guilhem Moulin de Gassac Blanc, being a blend of Grenache Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Clairette. A lighter white, with bright and zesty acidity, make this wine incredibly refreshing and full of character. Notes of lemon zest, poached pear and honeysuckle will show out of the glass. This wine is beautiful by itself, or try it with some lighter fare such as drunken goat cheese or a soft and simple brie.

There is a great selection of excellent and inexpensive white wines from France that contain varietals that you may not be familiar with -but be willing to take the risk and try something new! When our weather doesn't permit some patio sitting and sipping, sit inside with a glass of bright wine and live vicariously in another country for a glass, or two, or three.

Cheers,
Daniel Schmerr
