|Venue:|| Riverscape MetroPark|
111 E. Monument Avenue, Dayton, OH 45402 [map]
There's only one time in this city when you can run a 5K and then taste Irish whisky, attend a Gaelic mass and watch high energy Celtic-themed performers - or Irish linen and wool workers if you're so inclined - all in the same weekend.
That weekend is Dayton Celtic Fest.
One of Dayton's most popular festivals is coming to town again this weekend, the United Irish of Dayton Celtic Festival blows through RiverScape MetroPark, bringing with it authentic Irish food and beer, cultural traditions, crafts and of course, the ever popular music. Over 80,000 people packed into town for the fest last year, and its popularity shows no signs of letting up.
New this year: bring a kilt and join in the fun! There will be a Kilt parade lead down Monument St. by the Miami Valley Pipes and Drums bagpipers. That spectacle will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday and again at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Headliners include last year's fan favorite bands Scythian, Gaelic Storm, Teada as well as newcomer, FullSet. Other entertainers include Miami Valley Pipes and Drums, St Andrews Highland Dancers, Celtic Academy of Irish Dance, McGovern Ceili Dancers, Dwyer School of Irish Dance and the Royal Scottish Country Dancers. Additionally, while you can sample authentic Irish beers, there will also be a Whiskey tasting on Friday at 7p.m., Saturday at 4p.m. and 7p.m., and Sunday at 4p.m. which will give you the chance to sample some culture and get a feel for its cultural significance. Seating is limited on that one, and tickets are $35 so you ought to sign up fast.
On the other hand, if you want to get out and move, the event features a 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Kettering Sports Medicine, which will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 10 a.m. and a Celtic Bike Ride will be held Sunday, July 28, at 8:30 a.m. at Don Crawford Plaza in front of Fifth Third Field.
Festival times are Fri., July 26, 6 PM-11 PM, Sat., July 27, 12 PM-11 PM and Sun., July 28, 9 AM-6 PM and admission is FREE!
