Ohio's First Lady Mrs. Karen Kasich joins Chaminade Julienne Youth

Today, Ohio’s First Lady Mrs. Karen Kasich worked side by side with a group of students from the Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School of Dayton, as well as a group from the Feed Ohio campaign, filling "Good-to-Go” backpack bags for young children. The bags help to provide food for children over the weekend.

This event was held in conjunction with the statewide "Feed Ohio” campaign, which started on August 24th. The Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and faith-based and community groups throughout Ohio is leading a statewide food and funds drive to support Ohio food banks. The campaign, called Feed Ohio, encourages Ohioans to get involved and give what they can to help individuals and families struggling with hunger.

"With more than one in four children in Ohio struggling with food insecurity, this is an issue that resonates with me deeply,” said First Lady Kasich. "I am proud to be a part of this community-led effort to help individuals and families struggling with hunger. It’s important that we do what we can to support the most vulnerable members of our communities.”

Lyle Plummer, one of the Chaminade Youth who attended today said "Meeting Mrs. Kasich was an honor. To see the impact she is making, helping to fill the stomachs of children so they don’t have to come to school hungry, was incredible”. Lyle continued by saying, "Hunger is an issue no one should face, especially kids.” He, along with several other Chaminade Julieene High School students, volunteer on a weekly basis at the Food Bank. Emily Meyer, also a Chaminade student summed it up by saying, "We all need to help one another, and give back to our community”. Emily is passionate about helping others and devotes a lot of time to do just that.

Lee Lauren Alder, Development and Grant director for the Food bank stated "The Feed Ohio Campaign has helped raise awareness, that there isn’t just one face of hunger, it affects all walks of life. By providing food to those who are in need, a child is able to focus better at school, a worker is able to complete their daily tasks more efficiently, and feeding the need helps to bring a sense of security to ones life.”
