2nd Street Market offers homegrown and hand-crafted holiday items
The 2nd Street Market, 600 E. Second Street in downtown Dayton, will feature fresh, local food items and artisanal gifts for this year's holiday season.
2nd Street Market offers homegrown and hand-crafted holiday items
2nd Street Market offers seasonal homegrown and hand-crafted holiday shopping items. The Market will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 24) for its annual Stock Up Wednesday event. Extended Market hours give shoppers the chance to pick up holiday meal essentials, most of them locally produced, as well as flowers and much more. Vendors also offer specialty items, including paleo, vegan and gluten-free options. Holiday Market offerings include:
- Fresh, local fare: Locally-grown produce, artisan breads and desserts.
- Specialty food items: Hand-crafted olive oils, vinegars, salsas, teas, jams, jellies, candy and chocolate.
- Holiday décor: Handmade holiday wreaths, ornaments and flowers are available throughout the season.
- Artisan gifts: Pottery, fabric arts, woodworking items. Visit on Saturdays during the season for offerings from new vendors, including jewelry, glass art and primitive dolls.
Market vendors are currently taking pre-orders for items to be picked up during Stock Up Wednesday.
“The Market provides a one-stop shopping experience for busy families during the holidays,” said Jimmy Harless, Market manager. “The variety of vendors allows shoppers to stock up on fresh, local food and purchase one-of-a-kind gifts for their loved ones.”
Market-goers can enjoy lunch and holiday shopping while their children take pictures with Santa in mid-December. The dates are:
- Thursday, Dec. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Friday, Dec. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Shopping Small
The 2nd Street Market will be open on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
“Convenient hours and a variety of products are important to our customers, as is supporting small businesses,” said Harless. “By choosing to ‘shop small’ and patronizing one of the Market’s vendors or other small businesses downtown, shoppers are choosing to invest in Dayton.”
Small Business Saturday — an initiative that encourages holiday shoppers to purchase local goods from small businesses — falls on the Saturday after Black Friday each year.
Shopping small has grown into a season-long campaign designed to bolster local economies and support small businesses.
American Express estimates that 95 million people shopped at small businesses during 2015’s Small Business Saturday. Supporting small businesses can lead to job creation and reinvestment of tax dollars in local communities.
The 2nd Street Market is home to more than 40 small business vendors and is open year-round, Thursday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more by visiting metroparks.org/localfood.
