More Than A Mascot: Native Americans in Popular Culture

Native Americans are frequently portrayed in popular culture across multiple industries, from the Washington Redskins football franchise to Tonto, the Lone Ranger's sidekick. Though depictions of Native culture and people in logos, fashion, film, and media are currently a hot topic, many individuals, companies, and franchises maintain that they are honoring a historic culture.

Discover how Native Americans are portrayed in entertainment, advertising, and sports, then learn more about the history behind these representations. Visitors explore historic objects used by Native people and compare them to portrayals in popular culture to decide if these industries are honoring a rich heritage or using depictions of a historically disenfranchised people for capitalistic purposes.

Developed, curated, and presented by Public History Students at Wright State University. Artifacts and specimens provided by the Collections Department at the Dayton Society of Natural History.
