Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team Gathering of Veterans

After a year and half on their waiting list, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST)* is now officially booked for an appearance in Dayton, Ohio.

Called “Warrior Weekend” by the softball and veterans community, this event is a fund raiser for the new Fisher House being built of the Dayton VA Center in 2017.  To assure the integrity of the event, we are using the very prestigious Dayton Foundation as our focal point for tax deductible donations by major sponsors.  (Other avenues for contributing are also discussed in material we can provide upon request.)

The main event is scheduled as a double-header on Saturday, 21 May 2016, at Ron Nischwitz Stadium on the campus of Wright State University.  As it happens, this also Armed Forces Day!

Game #1 will be played at 9:30am against the WPAFB Military & Dayton 1st Responder All-Stars.  Game #2 will begin at 4:30pm against the Dayton Legends Softball Club All-Stars (a team composed primarily of veterans).  Immediately after each game the WWAAST will help us recognize local veterans by providing 50th Anniversary certificates and pins to Vietnam Veterans.

Ron Nischwitz Stadium is a cozy setting, providing seats for just 800 spectators (550 permanent seats) and 225 temporary seats.  To accommodate the diverse opposing communities (military & 1st Responders in game #1; and senior softball in game #2, tickets will be sold for separate sessions for $20 (permanent) and $10 (temporary).

To raise the funds necessary to bring in and host the WWAST, which is estimated at $15,000, several fund raising activities are being offered in addition to the ticket sales.  We are seeking help from corporations, organizations, and individuals by way of a very flexible Sponsorship Program.  The attached handouts explain the various ways to offer support and the multiple ways that we will recognize and “Thank” contributors.

We also have support from the Dayton Dragons who have offered a suite for up to 20 people to attend their 2pm home game in 5/3rd Field in Dayton on Sunday, 15 May 2016.  This attractive prize will be offered via raffle.

Our WWAST Planning & Execution Committee which is now meeting on a weekly basis at Vietnam Veterans of America, Dayton Chapter 97, includes members from the Montgomery & Greene Co. CVBs, Greater Dayton RTA, Fisher/Nightingale House, and numerous other local organizations.  This committee will be happy to send a representative to you to share our vision for what we’d like to become a standing “Warrior Weekend” event in Dayton to raise funds for worthy causes.

Our Purpose:  “Honoring our Veterans; Helping our Community.”

We hope you share that vision and can help us to host a successful and worthwhile event.
