Dance in the Desert
St. Paul’s Youth will premier a new adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s picture book, Dance in the Desert! Performed by the youth of St. Paul’s and invited guests, Dance in the Desert tells the tale of a beautiful journey, centered on the transformative love of a child. The desert is portrayed as a frightening wilderness, a place where no one is safe Yet, this small boy reveals a depth of trust and joy that reflects Divine influence. In fact, the story feels very much like a Christian allegory, perhaps even a symbolic foreshadowing of Jesus' life. The performances will be in the main Sanctuary.
Our young choreographer, Mira Sidhu, has set beautiful dances for the boy and each creature he meets in this uncharacteristically enchanted desert-scape. The recorded music is that of Zoe Keating, world reknowned cellist and performance artist. The costumes started with hats, carefully selected with assistance by the good people at Brim in the Oregon District. The animal costumes are designed by Ellie Treese. Painted faces will complete the visual effect. The exquisite scenery, designed for the original production by Diane Labrie and Nedra Smolka, is simple and elegant. You'll see a rich, starry sky, windblown sand hills and shadow play that heightens the risks of the journey.
Once there was a night in the desert when nobody was afraid and everybody danced. ~from the original story by Madeleine L'Engle
