Winter Restauarant Week has been extended at over 30 participating restaurants due to last week's extreme weather conditions. You have one more week to get out and enjoy the Winter Restaurant Week menus!

It's hard to avoid the cold that has plagued Dayton for weeks, but in the kitchens of many of this city's favorite restaurants, things are really heating up.

Winter Restaurant Week, presented by the Miami Valley Restaurant Association, kicks off Sunday through Feb 2nd. For the uninitiated, it's a chance local restaurants take to add something new to their menus and test the skill of their chefs, and offer multi-course meals of all new dishes. I got a chance to try out some of the best dishes at a packed out preview event last Wednesday.

"It's all about doing things we've never done before, experimenting and trying new things," Rawson said as he served me a lasagna dish with house-made ricotta cheese. "It's a lot of fun for us too."

Indeed, while it began as a chance to get you out to new restaurants, Restaurant Week is about changing things up for the restaurants, too. El Meson was showing off feijoada – a Brazilian specialty – while Station House tried out an ossobuco, an Italian dish of braised meat.

A favorite of mine, Jay's Seafood whipped up a pan seared trout served atop some lightly wilted spinach with almond and butternut squash, a series of very delicate flavors that were excellent together. Agnes All Natural Grill, one of my favorite downtown lunch spots, showed off its jerk chicken wings, while The Dock once again took it to a new level with their lobster bisque and that always-popular cheesecake.
