The utopian atmosphere of a Shaker community becomes complicated when a newcomer claims visions of angels. The Sisters suspect her to be a "winter Shaker;" one who suddenly “converts” when life gets too hard on the farm. Is this a resurgence of a spiritual Shaker celebration or something manufactured so that she can stay? Why is the newcomer privileged to see these visions yet the most devout Eldress is not? Soon other young women see angels too – or do they just long to appear part of a divine cluster amongst the faithful?
