Dragons fight off rain, but cant hold off Whitecaps in opener

Opening day is a magical time in the hearts of baseball fans everywhere, and a symbol of spring in full bloom. The weather at the Dragon's home opener didn't exactly embody the hope of spring, but this year the Dragons were at least were able to fight off the rain and give Dayton the baseball we've been yearning for.

The first inning was full of fireworks, as the West Michigan Whitecaps kicked off the first inning with a run. Dayton would answer with three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to left fielder Phillip Ervin's sacrifice fly, and a monster 2-run home run by first baseman Sebastian Elizalde to give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.

But with the help of three errors from the Dragons' defense, West Michigan fought back from a 4-2 deficit starting in the seventh inning, and capping off in the ninth when the Whitecaps scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to go up 5-4.

In their 15th season, the Dragons roster is loaded with familiar faces; 15 of the 25 on the roster played in Dayton last season or sometime in 2012, and that looks to be a good thing. Seven players on the roster are on the Reds' top 30 prospects list, according to Baseball America

The roster also includes the last two first round draft choices of the Cincinnati Reds, last night's starting pitcher Nick Travieso, who played in Dayton last season, and newcomer left fielder Phillip Ervin, the 2013 number one pick for the Reds.

The home opener marked the 984th consecutive sell-out for the Dragons, a record they've now extended over 100 games past the previous record. Be sure to get your share of the hottest ticket in town this summer, visit DaytonDragons.com and order your tickets today.
